From the beginning...

David Watson Transport Ltd started off life as Milbank Trucks Ltd in 1986.

David Watson started as a driver for Milbank Floors Ltd which was established in 1947 near Chelmsford in Essex and moved to Earls Colne in 1985. January 1984 saw the purchase of the first lorry, the first of its kind to be fitted with a Tico lorry loader arm, equipped with a winch to allow it to be used in the same manner as a mobile crane.

In July 1986 Milbank Trucks Ltd was formed as a separate company with David Watson as the Managing Director. Steps were taken to develop the company from a specialist in the delivery of concrete flooring products to taking on other work requiring the use of a heavylift crane lorry. In 1988, an 8 wheeled rigid lorry, fitted with a 30 ton/metre crane − the largest of its type at that time − was purchased with the specific aim of being able to lift heavier plant and equipment than any of the competitors.

Milbank Trucks continued to expand to over 115 trucks in the fleet and over 140 employees with depots at Earls Colne, Brandon, Cliffe, Stafford and Northampton which gave the company great coverage throughout the United Kingdom. In November 2008, due to the failure of the sister company, Milbank Trucks was forced into administration. However, because the company had been successful, the administrators and banks fully supported a takeover by David Watson and his team so December 22nd 2008 David Watson Transport Ltd completed the purchase of the assets of the former company.

Since the very beginning the company has achieved continuous and successful growth and through the hard work of our staff and a reputation for unrivalled service, we are still one of the largest specialist loader crane truck hire companies in the UK, enjoying an enviable reputation whilst continuing to set the standards for others to follow.

With nearing 100 trucks in the fleet, 150 employees and all 7 locations still operating, David Watson Transport provide their customers with a nationwide service and expertise that allows a fast, efficient and economical response to customer needs.

So what has all this got to do with training, you may well ask. Well, it’s our attention to detail, and our meticulous approach to the way we train our people that is a major factor in our success. We’ve always been at the forefront of our industry, taking high regard for service, reliability, flexibility, safety and professionalism. The way to achieve that was through thorough training of our employees.

We have full time qualified instructors within the company up to and including PTLLS (Preparation for Teaching and Lifelong Learning Skills) – a requirement for any government-funded training delivery.

The Driver CPC has caused a seismic shift in the requirements for LGV licence holders and training, yet because we were doing it already, it hasn’t impacted that greatly on us – all we’ve had to do was register the courses that we were delivering anyway. The obvious next step was to offer the same training commercially. Being a transport company we understand the need for flexibility and to accommodate transport business needs.
